Ombudsman briefs Rep. Schiff on Azerbaijani forces’ unlawful actions on Armenia’s sovereign territory
Armenia's Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan presented to U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff facts about the unlawful actions of the Azerbaijani troops on Armenian territory, including their attacks near Armenia’s villages and blocking of roads coupled with gross human rights violations.
The discussion was organized by the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region (ANCA-WR). Also joining the meeting were ANCA-WR Chairperson Nora Hovsepian, interim Executive Director Verginie Touloumian and ANCA-WR Government Affairs Coordinator Ruben Karapetian, the Ombudsman’s Office reported on Monday.
Tatoyan reported on the November 16 Azerbaijani incursion into Armenia’s sovereign territory in Syunik Province, which was accompanied by the attacks of the Azerbaijani military in the immediate vicinity of civilian settlements. He also reflected on the Azerbaijani incursions and human rights violations in Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces.
The underscored that the Azerbaijani troops are illegally stationed on the roads linking Armenia’s towns and villages, endangering people’s lives and health, as well as disrupting their normal life.
Arman Tatoyan also highlighted the urgency of the immediate return of Armenian captives, including those taken prisoner on November 16, illegally being held in Azerbaijan and their sham trials in Baku. He stressed the importance of international response to the issue.
Tatoyan expressed gratitude to Rep. Schiff for his active efforts towards human rights protection.
