Seyran Ohanyan: We must not allow a new reality making capitulation irreversible to be imposed
There are no necessary conditions for delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border at this point, Armenia’s former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, head of the Armenia parliamentary faction, said at the hearings organized by the opposition faction on Thursday, adding any such process would infringe upon Armenia's interests.
Participating in the parliamentary hearings are politicians, public figures, experts and MPs.
Ohanyan underscored that the current situation around Armenia and Artsakh is unfavorable for demarcation and delimitation.
"According to international experience, the most important criteria for the legitimacy of demarcation and delimitation are the rule of law, democracy, human rights, inviolability of all borders, which can be changed peacefully with the consent of the parties. It’s necessary for opposing states to be willing to live in peace as neighboring states, establishing an appropriate level of diplomatic relations and building mutual trust. The whole process must be carried out by a joint commission set up by the neighboring states," the ex-defense minister said.
According to him, the commission should take into account the border legislation, international experience, the historical heritage, the impact of the new border on the countries' economies, engineering infrastructure, as well as the life of border residents.
"It's expedient for us to use the data in the national and international norms, which clearly meet the interests of the Republic of Armenia and can be important for ensuring a peaceful and dignified life for the people of Armenia and Artsakh. The state must know what it wants, what prerequisites and priorities exist, and form a demand stemming from them, including in the National Assembly. There are no necessary conditions to implement it all in the current situation," Ohanyan said.
He recalled the slogan of the Armenia alliance, “No to the Turkification of Armenia, No to the Desolation of Artsakh!”, adding more people are joining the national resistance movement.
"As a result of all this, together with the people, we must not allow a new reality to be imposed, that would make the capitulation irreversible," Ohanian said.
