Former MP: What should Armenia’s parliamentary opposition do now?
Former MP and head of the Bright Armenia Party Edmon Marukyan on Friday outlined the steps the parliamentary opposition of Armenia should take in the current situation.
"What should the Armenian parliamentary opposition do now? Taking into account that Armenia is a parliamentary republic, I urge the opposition factions to draft a joint statement of the National Assembly,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The statement would clearly state the following:
- Pursuant to Article 88 of the Constitution of Armenia, the National Assembly is the people's representative body.
- According to Part 1 of Article 105, the parliamentary factions contribute to the formation of the political will of the National Assembly.
- Armenia excludes the provision of a sovereign corridor to Azerbaijan or any other country.
- Armenia is in favor of the lifting of the three-decade-long blockade imposed by Azerbaijan and Turkey and the opening of roads and communications.
- The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must not be connected with the delimitation and demarcation process and must be discussed separately. No delimitation and demarcation between Armenia and Azerbaijan can be carried out at the expense of the territory of the Artsakh Republic and without the expression of the free will of the Artsakh people.
- The Azerbaijani troops must withdraw from Armenian territory immediately, enabling the commission, which is to be set up, to carry out constructive work.
“I believe both the government and the opposition have the same position on this matter. Accordingly, as the highest legislative body of the country, they can and must act jointly on the foreign front, adopting the statement of the National Assembly,” Marukyan said.
