There are police officers, who seek to further please Armenian authorities, says opposition MP
Opposition MP Aram Vardevanyan on Tuesday expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions of some law enforcement officers during the recent opposition rallies.
Speaking at a meeting of the Armenian parliament Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, he urged Deputy Chief of Police Ara Fidanyan to deal with this issue.
"The actions of police officers have increasingly deviated from proportionality and the rule of law during the recent rallies," said Vardevanyan, who represents the opposition Armenia faction.
There are “conscientious and law-abiding” police officers, but there are also policemen who do anything to please the authorities, he stated.
"There are police officers, who seek to further please the authorities, which is unacceptable, because the police have the duty of protecting the rights of every Armenian citizen, rather than the government or the opposition,” the MP said.
He denounced the use of excessive force against people during any peaceful assembly as “unacceptable”.
