Armenian baritone Gevorg Hakobyan to make Vienna State Opera debut in December
Baritone and Honored Artist of Armenia Gevorg Hakobyan will make his Vienna State Opera debut in December.
Hakobyan, who is a soloist of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of Armenia, will be appearing in the role of Scarpia in Puccini's “Tosca” for the performances to be held on December 27 and 30.
In an interview to Opera Online, the Armenian artist talked about his career, his vision of Scarpia and his plans for the future, as well as music and theater.
In response to the question about how western and eastern culture influenced his decision and education as a singer with Armenia being on the eastern edge of Europe, he said: “The history of Armenia is several millennia old, and throughout the time Armenia has always been at the crossroads of different cultures. I believe this enriches people and helps them better understand the essence of other cultures and other people. And that helps me a lot as an artist.”
“Armenians have another characteristic that greatly benefits an opera singer. Most Armenian singers sing in other languages almost like native speakers. Of course, this is due to many factors. Yet, one of the main reasons is the Armenian alphabet, which contains 39 letters and 36 sounds,” Hakobyan noted.
