La Scala cancels the opening of its ballet season due to Covid
An outbreak of Covid infections among the dancers at La Scala has led to the premiere of the new production of La Bayadère on 15 December being cancelled. The performance for young people, originally scheduled for 14 December, will take place on Monday 20 December, and the performances on 15 and 17 December have been rescheduled to take place on 12 and 13 January respectively.
According to Gramilano report, every dancer was tested each day but not the maîtres who are obliged to wear masks during rehearsals.
Yesterday, 12 dancers tested positive, nine of whom are unvaccinated. It has just been announced that after the latest swabs, the number of dancers and production staff testing positive for Covid has risen to 14, and those who have had contact with them (almost everyone) must self-isolate, so all rehearsals have been cancelled.
Two children from La Scala’s dancing school who are in the production have also tested positive, so the 20 children in the production are now at home.
