Pashinyan, Aliyev reaffirm agreement on railway reopening
The trilateral meeting between Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of the European Council Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was held in Brussels on Tuesday.
The implementation process of the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, January 11, as well as November 26, 2021 were discussed, the prime minister’s office reported.
Pashinyan stressed the need for the full implementation of the above-mentioned statements, in particular, emphasizing the need for an immediate solution to humanitarian issues: ensuring the return of prisoners of war, hostages and other detainees. Reference was made to the work aimed at opening regional communications.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders reaffirmed the agreement on relaunching the railway. Accordingly, the railway will operate in accordance with internationally accepted border and customs rules, based on the principle of reciprocity, under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the respective countries. Armenia will get railway access to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation.
Taking concrete steps to reduce tensions in the region was highlighted.
Reference was made to the possible steps aimed at carrying out demarcation and delimitation of the borderline, as well as building mutual trust between Armenia and Azerbaiajn.
The parties agreed to continue contacts.
