Blinken welcomes statements by Armenia and Turkey on appointing special envoys
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has welcomed the statements by the Turkish foreign minister and Armenia’s Foreign Ministry on appointing special envoys to normalize bilateral relations.
“We welcome and strongly support statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and the MFA of Armenia on appointing Special Envoys to discuss the process of normalization,” he tweeted on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Turkey and Armenia announced that they will appoint special envoys to discuss steps to normalize ties.
“We will mutually appoint envoys as part of normalization steps with Armenia," Cavusoglu said during a speech in parliament on Monday. “We will start charter flights to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.”
Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Vahan Hunanyan confirmed his announcement.
“We positively assess the statement of the Turkish FM regarding the appointment of a special representative as part of normalization of relations and confirm that the Armenian side will appoint its special envoy for this dialogue,” he said.
