Around 50 confirmed Armenian captives being held in Azerbaijan, lawyer says
Nearly 50 confirmed Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) are being held in Azerbaijan, human rights lawyer Siranush Sahakyan told reporters on Monday.
She added that there are 80 more captives being held in Baku, but their status has not been officially confirmed.
The lawyer stated that the repatriation of Armenian prisoners will be continuous. According to her, as long as Azerbaijan holds officially confirmed captives, their repatriation is "inevitable".
Sahakyan said the process of repatriation is usually carried out as part of political processes, with Russia, the U.S., the European Union or other powerful states using their political influence for it.
“This process is partial; it is not carried out in its entirety. It may be logical, since there are ongoing major political processes involving international actors. And it is within the framework of this process that certain humanitarian issues are being solved," she said.
