Opposition leader Garnik Isagulyan detained
The leader of Armenia’s opposition National Security Party, Garnik Isagulyan, has been detained, the Investigative Committee of Armenia said in a statement on Tuesday.
Isagulyan is accused of false crime reporting at a news conference on September 20.
In particular, during the conference he said that Armenian Ambassador to Ukraine Vladimir Karapetyan was allegedly recruited by the Azerbaijani and Turkish special services, claiming that the diplomat had been cooperating with them since 2008.
He also stated that Karapetyan had held talks with Azerbaijan's ambassador to Ukraine, as a result of which an agreement was allegedly reached on a meeting between the Armenian prime minister and representatives of the Turkish president in Batumi for the former to “ask for money to pay pensions” in Armenia.
According to the Investigative Committee, the Armenian diplomat was unfairly accused of committing an especially grave crime. The agency underlined that Isagulyan had been previously accused of false denunciation against the country's prime minister, former and current officials.
