My Step faction boycotts Yerevan municipal council meeting
Members of the My Step faction, which holds majority at the Yerevan City Council, boycotted its meeting on Tuesday. Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan decided to announce a 30-minute break.
"I have been told that there is no quorum. At this point, we have to announce a 30-minute break so that everyone can gather. If no quorum is ensured in half an hour, the meeting will be cancelled," the mayor said.
Before the break, however, Marutyan shared good news for the Yerevan residents.
"Today a tender has already been announced for the purchase of 280 elevators," the mayor said. "In fact, 1,000 elevators will be replaced in Yerevan in 2022.”
Earlier, the My Step faction, which initiated a motion of no-confidence in Marutyan last week, announced its decision not to take part in today’s meeting of the Yerevan municipal council, adding it plans to hold a “special meeting after the election of a new mayor on December 22.”
The pro-government majority clarified that the reason for the boycott was the “political crisis between the City Council and the Yerevan mayor.”
The meeting of the Yerevan City Council was not held after the break due to the lack of quorum.
