Opposition says meeting with Pashinyan in a closed format not expedient
Two opposition factions of the National Assembly - "Armenia" and "With Honour" factions - have issued a joint statement, reiterating their previous position about holding a meeting with Nikol Pashinyan in a closed format. According to the statement issued Thursday, the National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan has passed a suggestion on behalf of Pashinyan to meet.
"In the past period the authorities have proved on numerous occasions they are carrying out suspicious negotiations, promoting exclusively their antinational agenda. Any negotiation process may not be considered itself a state or military secret. The closed format meetings on issues concerning the Armenian people are unacceptable, and we have already expressed our position on the matter," the statement said.
It added that the meeting can take place only in transparent and open format to ensure accountability to the public - a suggestion which has already been rejected. "Consequently, we reiterate our position on holding a closed format as not expedient," added the statement.
