Goris Mayor Arush Arushanyan to remain under arrest
Arush Arushanyan, who was reelected as Mayor of Goris, a community in Armenia’s Syunik Province, will remain in custody.
The Syunik Court of General Jurisdiction, presided over by judge Gnel Gasparyan, on Tuesday denied a defense motion to release him on bail, his lawyer Erik Aleksanyan told Pastinfo.
The defense lawyers had earlier filed a motion to the court to release the mayor on a bail of 30 million drams.
At the previous court hearing, Lusine Avetyan, head of the village of Karahunj in Goris community, refused to confirm her incriminating testimony against Arushanyan, on the basis of which he had been arrested.
A bloc led by Arush Arushanyan won the 17 October local elections in Goris by a wide margin. He was installed as Goris mayor by force of law on 11 November.
