Opposition candidate set to head Armenia’s Vardenis community
Opposition candidate Aharon Khachatryan has been elected head of Vardenis, an enlarged community in Armenia’s Gegharkunik Province, by a vote of 14 for and no against, Satenik Minasyan, an opposition member of the Vardenis City Council, announced on Thursday.
Khachatryan thanked the United Vardenis and Aharon Khachatryan factions for nominating and supporting his candidacy for the post. He expressed confidence that together they would successfully handle all problems facing Vardenis, with a common goal of developing and strengthening the community.
The city councilors from the ruling Civil Contract party did not participate in the election of the community head.
The two opposition blocs won 14 seats together in the Vardenis City Council as a result of the December 5 elections, while the Civil Contract party won 13 seats.
