CSTO peacekeeping forces deployed to Kazakhstan to protect key state and military facilities
Peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has entered Kazakhstan on Thursday and an advanced unit from the Russian contingent have already begun to fulfill their tasks, the CSTO Secretariat said in a statement.
According to the source, the collective forces included subdivisions of the armed forces of Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and the main tasks will be the protection of important state and military facilities, assistance to the forces of law and order of the Republic of Kazakhstan in stabilizing the situation.
Apart from that, aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ military and transport aviation are sending the Airborne forces’ military units to Kazakhstan as part of the mission.
To remind, CSTO decided to send collective "peacekeeping forces" for a "limited" period of time "in view of the threat to national security and the sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan," according to a statement from Nikol Pashinyan, who is also chairman of the military bloc.
The move followed an appeal from Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for help from the alliance after unrest broke out across Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
