Parakar residents demand snap elections
Dozens of residents of Armenia's Parakar community have gathered outside the Armenian government building to protest what they call 'the ongoing unlawful process' in the community Council's of Elders.
Tensions arose in Parakar after the December 5 local elections, when two candidates announced that they had been elected head of the community. "The Country to Live" party won 10 seats in the Council of Elders and elected its candidate, Valodya Grigoryan, as new head of the community. Afterwards, the Davit Minasyan bloc and the ruling Civil Contract party, that won 11 seats together in the council, elected Davit Minasyan as Parakar community head by 11 votes. As a result, the members of the "Country to Live party" resigned their mandates and put forward demands to hold new elections.
"We have gathered here to inform the prime minister in person about the ongoing unlawful processes," one of the participants of the protest told reporters. In his words, around 60% of the enlarged community support their demand, including those who had voted the representative illegally elected as head of community.
To recall, Parakar residents have also launched a petition and 6 thousand people have joined it demanding snap elections.
