Armenian parliament speaker takes over as interim president
Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan has taken over as interim president of Armenia, pending the election of a new president.
Simonyan signed a protocol on the termination of President Armen Sarkissian’s powers on Tuesday.
One of Simonyan’s deputies, Hakob Arshakyan, is set to temporarily serve as parliament speaker.
Sarkissian tendered his resignation on 23 January and did not withdraw it within one week.
Under to the Armenian Constitution, the duties of the head of state are performed by the parliament speaker until the election of a new president, which must be held 25 to 35 days after the office is left vacant.
