Opposition mayor of Armenia’s Goris to remain in custody
The jailed opposition mayor of Goris, a community in Armenia’s Syunik Province, will remain in pre-trial custody.
Armenia’s Court of Criminal Appeals, presided over by judge Rubik Mkhitaryan, on Wednesday denied a defense motion to release Mayor Arush Arushanyan on bail, upholding a lower court ruling.
Speaking to reporters, his lawyer Armen Melkonyan said that the judge's decision did not come as a surprise to them.
“We had no delusions that the judge would have the courage to administer justice,” the lawyer said, adding they will announce their further steps after discussions.
He again dismissed Arushanyan’s arrest as an act of political persecution.
Arushanyan has been placed under arrest since 16 July after being charged with electoral offence.
