Judge Boris Bakhshiyan’s right to education violated, lawyer says
Jailed judge Boris Bakhshiyan’s lawyer, Yerem Sargsyan, has applied to Armenia's Supreme Judicial Council, alleging a gross violation of the judge's right to education.
“Prior to his arrest, judge Boris Bakhshiyan applied to the School of Advocates of Armenia as a special applicant, passed the relevant stages and was to take part in an oral examination slated for February 17,” the lawyer said in his appeal on Tuesday.
However, the law enforcement agency dealing with the criminal probe denied the defense lawyers’ request to allow Bakhshiyan to attend the exam, thus violating his right to education.
"I expect the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia to actively intervene and ensure the unhindered exercise of judge Boris Bakhshiyan's right to education, envisaged by the Constitution of Armenia," Sargsyan said.
Bakhshiyan, who is a judge at the Syunik Court of General Jurisdiction, was arrested on 7 February after he ordered the release of oppositionist and war veteran Ashot Minasyan. He stands accused of illegally arresting a defendant in a trial presided over by him.
