Omicron subvariant BA.2 detected in Armenia
The BA.2 offshoot of the Omicron Covid-19 variant, which is more contagious, has been detected in Armenia, the Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday.
Employees of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) of the National Academy of Sciences and the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University jointly carried out sequencing of samples of positive PCR tests for COVID-19.
The results revealed that the Omicron variant and its BA.2 subvariant are now also circulating in Armenia, the ministry said.
“According to scientists, the BA.2 offshoot is more contagious and could cause more severe disease,” it added.
