Armenian MPs pay tribute to Sumgait pogrom victims
Armenian lawmakers observed a minute's silence to pay tribute to the victims of the 1988 Sumgait pogroms at the beginning of a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs on Monday.
34 years ago, on February 27-29, with the organization of the Soviet Azerbaijani authorities and the connivance of law enforcement officers, the massacres of the Armenian population in the city of Sumgait were carried out, resulting in the killing of hundreds of Armenians, including women, children, elderly, and forcible displacement of thousands, opposition Hayastan faction MP Aregnaz Manukyan recalled.
Committee Chair Vladimir Vardanyan highlighted the pogroms, which were the first manifestations of Armenophobia in Azerbaijan, have not yet been condemned by the international community.
"This is one of the events where the pain does not go away as years pass. We must remember the victims of the tragedy every day," said Vardanyan, emphasizing that any anti-Armenian action must be condemned.
