Vanetsyan: Developments in Ukraine may trigger escalations in South Caucasus
The developments in Ukraine cannot but affect Armenia and may trigger tensions in South Caucasus, MP Artur Vanetsyan, head of the opposition With Honor faction and Homeland Party, said in an interview to the Zhoghovurd daily on Friday.
“On one hand, the party directly involved in them is our strategic ally. On the other hand, it is also obvious that events of such a large scale in a region so close to ours may prepare the ground for escalations in the South Caucasus as well,” the lawmaker said.
In Vanetsyan’s words, at least attempts by Azerbaijan to take advantage of the situation to solve some small, local problems cannot be ruled out.
"Such efforts of the enemy are already evident. In recent days, we've been receiving disturbing news about the enemy's provocative actions in Artsakh as well as the increase of tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which resulted in casualties, both dead and wounded, on our side,” Vanetsyan said.
“At the same time, Baku and Ankara continue their anti-Armenian rhetoric at the highest level; they are again talking about the so-called "Zangezur corridor", imposing contributions on Armenia, etc. What is this if not the enemy's attempts to make the most of the current situation? Incidentally, I would like to note that in this respect the situation was quite predictable and we had to be ready for it," he noted.
