Opposition candidate elected Vardenis mayor
The City Council of Vardenis on Wednesday elected opposition candidate Aharon Khachatryan as the new mayor of the enlarged community in Gegharkunik Province of Armenia in a vote of 14 for and 13 against.
His candidacy was backed by the Aharon Khachatryan and United Vardenis factions.
The ruling Civil Contract party’s faction did not field a candidate for the post. All members of the faction, which holds 13 seats in the municipal council, voted against Khachatryan’s candidacy and left the meeting after the vote.
According to the results of the December 5 local elections in the enlarged community, the Civil Contract party received 12 seats, the Aharon Khachatryan bloc 10 seats, and the United Vardenis bloc 5 seats. Afterwards, the two blocs signed a statement on cooperation and the joint formation of local government.
