Oppositionist Garnik Isagulyan to be set free
The leader of Armenia’s opposition National Security Party, Garnik Isagulyan, will be released from custody.
Judge Vache Margaryan of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction on Friday ordered his release on a bail of 10 million drams. The opposition politician will be released after the bail money is transferred to the court's deposit account.
Isagulyan is accused of false crime reporting at a news conference on September 20, 2021.
In particular, during the conference he said that Armenian Ambassador to Ukraine Vladimir Karapetyan was allegedly recruited by the Azerbaijani and Turkish special services, claiming that the diplomat had been cooperating with them since 2008.
He also stated that Karapetyan had held talks with Azerbaijan's ambassador to Ukraine, as a result of which an agreement was allegedly reached on a meeting between the Armenian prime minister and representatives of the Turkish president in Batumi for the former to “ask for money to pay pensions” in Armenia.
According to the Investigative Committee, the Armenian diplomat was unfairly accused of committing an especially grave crime. The agency underlined that Isagulyan had been previously accused of false denunciation against the country's prime minister, former and current officials.
