Minister: Under-five mortality rate down by 0.5 per mill in Armenia in 2021
The under-five mortality rate dropped by 0.5 per mill in Armenia in 2021 from 2020, Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan told a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Health on Monday, hailing the data.
“Armenia has made some progress in the three key indicators characterizing a country: child mortality, maternal mortality and life expectancy,” the minister said.
She noted that as part of the state-sponsored program on the use of assisted reproductive technologies, 76 children were born and 211 pregnancies were registered in Armenia in 2021.
According to her, 850 citizens benefited from the program, with the number expected to increase this year.
Anahit Avanesyan recalled that last year changes were made to the program on the use of assisted reproductive technologies, as a result of which the list of beneficiaries of the program was expanded to include couples who lost a son during the 2020 hostilities as well as residents from border settlements.
According to the minister, the program allows beneficiaries to use the services of a surrogate mother, which increases their chances of having a child.
