Opposition group holds protest outside Armenian government
The “5165” opposition movement led by Karin Tonoyan staged a protest outside the Armenian government building on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming talks between Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev in Brussels.
The talks are expected to focus on a “peace treaty” between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Baku has named five principles it wants the peace deal to be based on, including mutual recognition of each other's territorial integrity. Pashinyan has publicly announced that they are essentially acceptable to Yerevan.
The opposition group warned Pashinyan against signing any document or making statements that would “predetermine Azerbaijani sovereignty over Artsakh.”
They demanded the recognition of Artsakh's independence and protested against the “pro-Azerbaijani policy” pursued by the current Armenian authorities on the Artsakh issue.
Karin Tonoyan pointed to Ilham Aliyev’s claims that “Nagorno-Karabakh no longer exists.”
"They are right, there is no Nagorno-Karabakh, there is the Republic of Artsakh, the Armenian Artsakh, which is making great efforts to prove that it also has the right to life and self-determination. Without Artsakh there is no security for Armenia. Every Armenian must realize it,” she underscored.
