Artsakh FM: Brussels meeting mainly focused on Armenian-Azerbaijani relations
The meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in Brussels mainly focused on bilateral relations, Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Foreign Minister David Babayan told the Artsakh Public TV on Thursday.
Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev held talks on Wednesday hosted by European Council President Charles Michel. They agreed to start drafting a bilateral "peace treaty" and to set up a joint commission tasked with delimiting the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“The topics discussed and the official statements following it make it clear that the emphasis has been put mainly on bilateral relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Babayan said. “In this case, it can be considered a separate factor.”
Referring to the future status of Artsakh, the official reiterated that “Artsakh can never be part of Azerbaijan.”
“The Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations are, naturally, interconnected, but at the same time they are separate processes,” Babayan said, underscoring that the normalization of Armenian-Azeri relations “cannot predetermine the future of Artsakh.”
