Turkey no longer wants to be a 'turkey'
The United Nations on Wednesday granted Turkey's request to change its name from Turkey to Türkiye in all official documents, RIA Novosti reported.
“The Republic of Turkey has been renamed the Republic of Türkiye,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, adding the change came into force immediately after the world body received a letter from the Turkish authorities.
Turkey's place in alphabetical order will not change, Dujarric added.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu explained that the change in the spelling was adopted as part of the steps aimed at "increasing the country's prestige in the international arena.”
The move is seen as part of a push by Ankara to dissociate its name from the bird, turkey.
