Armenian doctor reveals how to protect kids from heatwave
Extreme heat can have negative health effects not only on the elderly, but also on children, because it is not easy for them to endure the heatwave, too.
Speaking to Panorama.am, Gohar Gevorgyan, a pediatrician at the Muratsan University Hospital Complex, has revealed what parents should do to help their children beat the heat.
Speaking about the diet, the pediatrician said that children need balanced and digestible food with enough carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamins.
Gevorgyan noted that their diet should include cereals, meat, vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits must be thoroughly washed under running water for several minutes.
According to the specialist, in the summer heat children should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Sweet fizzy drinks should not be given to them, instead children can drink small amounts of mineral water.
Choosing the right clothes for children is also important in the summer heat. The doctor says they should be dressed in lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics.
"The choice of clothing is especially important for young children because their skin is delicate and sensitive. If children are outside, they should wear clothes with long sleeves and cotton pants," says the pediatrician.
