Parents of fallen soldiers to demand Pashinyan's arrest
The parents of Armenian soldiers killed in the 2020 war in Artsakh have unveiled their plans to hold a protest outside the Prosecutor General's Office on Tuesday.
In a joint statement released on Monday, the parents said they were going to demand Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s arrest and criminal charges against him for mishandling the war, which left thousands of Armenian soldiers dead.
They denounced the latest handover of Artsakh’s Berdzor town and its two surrounding villages, Aghavno, and Sus, to Azerbaijan which, they insisted, put Armenia’s regions at risk.
The statement comes ahead of a meeting of Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and European Council President Charles Michel to be held in Brussels on August 31.
“We, the parents of the heroes who have lost their loved ones, urge you to gather outside the building of the Prosecutor General's Office at 4pm on August 30 to demand that Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan finally fulfill his official duties and arrest the man holding the prime minister’s post who proclaimed himself commander-in-chief during the 44-day war, Nikol Pashinyan, for inciting a war and leading the country to defeat as a result of treason and inaction, which left thousands of casualties, territorial losses and material damage, as well as for surrendering new territories, roads, water and mineral resources to the enemy from November 9, 2020 and to date,” reads the statement.
The parents claim that Pashinyan publicly admitted deliberately sacrificing thousands in his remarks in the parliament on April 13 when he said the war “could have been averted, as a result of which we would have had the same situation, but of course without the casualties.”
They urged all political forces and NGOs to join their demand in an effort to “save the country from collapse”.
