Appellate court to issue ruling on Chalabyan’s arrest on Wednesday
The Armenian Court of Criminal Appeals on Tuesday ended hearings of an appeal against the arrest of public figure and opposition activist Avetik Chalabyan.
Presiding judge Ruzanna Barseghyan is expected to issue a ruling in the case on Wednesday afternoon.
At today’s hearing, Chalabyan’s lawyers reiterated that their client’s arrest was unjustified, defending the request to release him.
An Armenian first instance court ordered the rearrest of Chalabyan, a co-founder of the Arar Foundation and a member of the Consolidation Movement, on 3 August.
He was first arrested on 14 May for allegedly trying to pay students of the Armenian National Agrarian University to participate in anti-government protests in Yerevan. The oppositionist was released from custody after his arrest period expired on July 27.
Chalabyan dismisses the charges as politically motivated, accusing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of “persecuting” him and his family members.
