'Stay out of politics': Armenians deplore Ruben Hakhverdyan's planned nomination for Yerevan mayor
Social media users have criticized the decision to nominate famous Armenian singer and composer Ruben Hakhverdyan for Yerevan mayor.
The European Party of Armenia announced plans to nominate Hakhverdyan as its candidate for Yerevan mayor in the 2023 municipal elections.
“Ruben Hakhverdyan is the European Party of Armenia’s mayoral candidate in the Yerevan elections,” the party chair, Tigran Khzmalyan, wrote on Facebook on Sunday.
Many users deplored the decision in their comments on the post, underlining that an artist “should not be involved in politics.”
"I have never wanted to see you in the [political] arena, so I regret the decision. You should stay out of politics. We love you and your songs, Mr. Hakhverdyan, and you are like your songs. I am not going to vote for you,” one said.
“Why have you talked this man into entering politics so that he is “spoiled” like [singer Arthur] Meschian?” asked another.
“A shoemaker should make shoes, while a baker should bake bread,” a third user said.
“Stay out of politics!” one advised.
“An artist should not get into politics. Otherwise, they risk losing their credibility regardless of the conditions. This is a wrong decision,” a user stated.
