Azerbaijani forces deployed 4.5 km away from Jermuk, says Armenian army chief
Azerbaijani forces advanced 7.5 kilometers deep into Armenian territory near the resort town of Jermuk in Vayots Dzor Province during their latest aggression, the chief of the Armenian military’s General Staff, Edvard Asryan, said on Friday.
Foreign diplomats and heads of international organizations accredited in Armenia visited Jermuk to familiarize themselves with the consequences of the Azerbaijani aggression on the ground.
“The adversary achieved certain advantage on this front, seizing an 8.5-km-wide and 7.5-km-deep area in Armenia’s sovereign territory,” the army chief told them at a meeting.
He said the Azerbaijani incursions were carried out by groups and detachments.
"Some groups and detachments are under direct control of our forces, including in encirclement," Asryan stressed.
The Azerbaijani troops are now deployed 4.5 kilometers away from the outskirts of Jermuk, he said.
The army chief highlighted that the Azerbaijani military delivered artillery and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure in the town.
“The Jermuk ropeway widely used by foreign tourists came under shelling as well. There are also children's playgrounds on the territory of the ropeway. Since no evacuations were conducted, local residents and visitors from different countries were in the town," he noted.
