Pro-government MP nominated as new CEC chair
Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has nominated MP Vahagn Hovakimyan to become the next chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).
In a Facebook post on Monday, Hovakimyan announced his decision to quit the ruling party, citing Article 195 of the Constitution which bans CEC members from holding membership in any political party or otherwise engaging in political activities.
“I have also submitted resignation as an MP and Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the Armenian National Assembly,” he wrote.
Outgoing CEC Chairman Tigran Mukuchyan’s term of office expires on October 12. He has held the post since 2011.
