Life returning to normal in Armenian spa town shelled by Azeri forces
Life in Jermuk, a spa town in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor Province shelled by Azerbaijani forces last month, is returning to normalcy.
“The resorts, schools, kindergartens, banks and various infrastructures of the city are returning to their normal activities," Jermuk Mayor Vahagn Arsenyan wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
Jermuk was among the Armenian border settlements which came under Azerbaijani shelling on 13-14 September. Azeri troops also carrying out drone attacks on the town, damaging its civilian infrastructure.
Speaking to Panorama.am on Thursday, Deputy Mayor of Jermuk Vardan Sargsyan said the infrastructure has been functioning again in Jermuk for two weeks now, while banks, markets and schools are reopening gradually.
He underscored that the town was nearly empty following Azerbaijan’s attacks but “it is coming back to life” now as more and more people are returning to Jermuk.
The deputy mayor says the damaged critical infrastructure and roads have been resorted, while government support is required for further restoration works.
"Further assessments [of damages] are being carried out, government assistance is needed," Sargsyan said.
