Berd election winner resigns City Council seat
Harutyun Manucharyan, the incumbent mayor of Berd in Armenia’s Tavush Province, says he has given up his seat in the municipal council.
The Strong Community bloc led by him won the local elections in the expanded Berd community in late September, gaining 5,685 votes. The ruling Civil Contract party received 4,298 votes.
Manucharyan has been under arrest since November 2021 for alleged misuse of power.
“I have decided to resign my seat in the City Council,” he said in a statement posted by the bloc on Facebook on Friday, stressing he will continue to serve the community.
“The Strong Community alliance has triumphed thanks to your trust and support, and will deliver on all its promises.
“The welfare of the community, its development and security are above any personal interests or position for me.
“I will continue to live and work for our community,” reads the statement.
