Brusov University students continue protests in Yerevan
Hundreds of students and lecturers from the Yerevan Brusov State University continue protests against the planned merger of their university with two others in the Armenian capital.
The Armenian government plans to merge the Brusov State University with the Armenian State Pedagogical University and the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport.
The protesters marched to the government building hosting a cabinet meeting on Thursday, chanting “Brusov will win!”, “No future without us!”, “No to merger!”, “Resolve, struggle, victory!” and the like.
The university students submitted an application to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday, demanding that the merger decision be scrapped and an academic council be set up to elaborate standards on the merger of the educational institutions.
A group of six people have been invited to the government on Friday to discuss the demands of the students, Grisha Tamrazyan, the chief adviser to Brusov Rector Karine Harutyunyan, said.
The Brusov students and employees opposing the merger call the decision arbitrary, claiming no “reasonable justification” has been provided for it so far.
