Armenian government critic unhappy with police response to attack on him
Political activist Edgar Ghazaryan, a vocal critic of the Armenian government, expressed discontent with the police response to the violent attack on him this week.
Ghazaryan was assaulted by two unknown men near his Yerevan home on Tuesday. He suffered head and other injuries and was taken to a hospital following the attack.
After leaving the hospital, Ghazaryan accused the Armenian authorities of ordering the assault in retaliation for his political activity.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, the activist condemned the police for classifying the violent attack as an “act of inflicting minor bodily harm”.
He pointed to the rapid police response to the separate incidents involving two “supporters” of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during opposition protests in Yerevan in spring.
The protesters threw a water bottle at Antares Media Holding Director Armen Martirosyan and swore at actor Sos Janibekyan at the time, which was qualified as “violence” by the police.
“None of the criminals has been arrested four days after the murder attempt against me. The crime remains unsolved,” Ghazaryan said.
