Parliament speaker: Armenia awaiting CSTO's clear response to Azeri attack
240 Armenian servicemen were killed in the Azerbaijani military aggression in mid-September, the parliament speaker said on Wednesday.
On 13 September, Azerbaijan launched a massive attack on the sovereign territory of Armenia, shelling the cities and towns of Vardenis, Goris, Ishkanasar, Kapan, Sotk, Artanish, and Jermuk and the surrounding villages. The attack also resulted in civilian deaths and injuries.
“The September 13 attack resulted in 240 Armenian casualties,” Speaker Alen Simonyan told reporters, underlining that some Armenian border positions remain occupied by Azeri troops.
He stressed the need for a clear political response from the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) to the Azerbaijani invasion of Armenia.
“Armenia is awaiting a reaction from the CSTO, which should be at least political at this point,” the speaker said.
“Armenia does not want to undermine its relations with any country. Armenia just demands a fair treatment and compliance with the commitments regarding its borders. We will do everything possible to that end,” Simonyan stressed.
Later the parliament speaker’s spokesperson, Tsovinar Khachatryan, said Simonyan mistakenly put the toll at 240. According to official data, over 210 Armenians were killed or missing in the latest Azeri attack.
