Economy minister: Armenia's wheat sowing area not expanded due to Azeri aggression
Armenia planned to expand its wheat sowing area up to 75,000 hectares, but following the latest Azerbaijani aggression, wheat cultivation is low in some parts of Syunik and Gegharkunik Provinces for safety reasons, which prevents the government from reaching its target, Minister of Agriculture Vahan Kerobyan told parliamentary hearings on the draft state budget for 2023 on Monday.
He also said that the government has worked out and implemented a large investment program on cattle breeding and plans to allocate 3,5bln drams for it in 2023 in an effort to increase livestock products self-sufficiency.
Highlighting the successful cattle breeding program implemented in 2022, Kerobyan said: "Yeremyan Projects provided full financing for the construction of a large cattle breeding complex in the Tashir community by investing about $32 million, which is also partially supported by the program we are implementing."
He claims the large cattle breeding complex alone will increase Armenia's average milk yield by 1%.
The economy minister admits that funding for Armenia’s agriculture sector is not yet sufficient and is not comparable with the funds allocated by EU countries for agricultural development.
