Gymnastics world champion Artur Davtyan seeks Olympic gold
Armenia’s newly-crowned gymnastics world champion Artur Davtyan seeks an Olympic gold after winning a historic gold medal for Armenia at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, England on Sunday.
The 30-year-old earned a two-vault average of 15.050, besting reigning champion Carlos Yulo (14.950) to become the independent country's first world champion.
“I am overjoyed to have won this medal for my country,” the gymnast told a news conference in Yerevan on Wednesday.
“I would like to thank my coaches, the chairman of the [Gymnastics] Federation as well as my friends who have a small input into this achievement. We should always do our best to keep Armenia’s reputation high across the world. Next year is more important as Olympic qualifiers will be held,” Davtyan said.
He says that having no medal from the previous World Championships and immediately claiming gold, he now seeks to win a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games.
