Armenia's population to drop to 2.6 million in 2050, UN projects
The world’s population is projected to reach 8 billion people on 15 November, Anna Hovhannisyan, Population and Development Project Coordinator at the UN Population Fund Armenia (UNFPA), said on Tuesday, citing the UN’s World Population Prospects 2022.
It took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion. The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
Speaking at a news conference in Yerevan, Hovhannisyan said the global population growth was driven by high levels of fertility in some countries, a decline in mortality rates and an increase in human lifespan.
“Life expectancy ranged from 60 to 65 years twenty years ago, whereas in 2019 it rose to 72 years. Average lifespan is expected to reach 77 years in 2050. Life expectancy is 77 years in Armenia,” she said.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s population is projected to decrease to 2.6 million people in 2050, Hovhannisyan said.
“According to official data in 2021, the total fertility rate is 1.6 children, which is expected to gradually drop until 2050. The populations are projected to decline only in the countries of the region, including Armenia, Georgia and Russia, by 2050,” she noted.
