Scientists stage fresh protest in Yerevan
Employees of the Scientific Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences staged a new protest against the planned construction of a residential complex near their institute outside the Yerevan city hall on Wednesday.
The Green Property Development CJSC plans to build a high-rise in the former area of the Institute of Fine Organic Chemistry located at 26/1 Azatutyan Avenue in the Kanaker-Zeytun administrative district of Yerevan. The company acquired the property in May 2019.
The protesters gathered outside the Yerevan Municipality to demand explanations from the authorities over the alienation of the territory and the construction permit issued by them.
They were holding posters reading, “Science is power”, “No future without science”, “Powerful science, powerful Armenia” and the like.
The protesting employees claim that the high-rise complex will threaten the operation of the Scientific Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
The head and deputy head of the research institute were eventually asked in for a meeting with the municipal authorities.
Meanwhile, the protesters started a march to the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.
