CSTO chief: Situation on Armenian-Azeri border complicated
The latest summit of the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Yerevan focused on the situation globally as well as in all three security regions within the CSTO area of responsibility, namely Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas said in an interview to the Belarusian TV channel ONT on Sunday.
“If we were to generally assess the situation in the Caucasian region, the trends that are now taking shape there inspire cautious optimism,” he said. “All sides are seeking peace in the region, the signing of a peace treaty, legal registration of borders, unblocking of transport communications… The regional countries are headed this way, which is very good.”
"But, on the other hand, the situation is intricate, first of all, on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Shootings are reported there almost every day... The set of measures offered by CSTO to support Armenia is diverse. It’s about political and diplomatic as well as military measures, including the deployment of a mission to the border which would realistically assess the situation... It is basically supported by all states," Zasyan stated.
According to him, the only thing that the CSTO leaders failed to achieve at the Yerevan meeting on 23 November was a “consensual assessment of the situation” on the border.
