Opposition MP slams rights groups for silence over police brutality in Armenian region
MP Gegham Nazaryan of the opposition Hayastan bloc has denounced human rights groups for their silence over the police brutality against civilians in Armenia’s Lori Province last week.
In a social media post on Monday, he said patrol police “insulted and brutally beat up” two men and a 17-year-old son of one of them, causing severe injuries as they tied to clear the way for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's motorcade on 25 November.
The deputy recalled that a young pregnant woman, Sona Mnatsakanyan, was killed after being struck by a police car escorting Pashinyan's motorcade in April this year.
“Where are civil rights activists, human rights advocates and international organizations that were constantly making noise, protesting against the logging of trees in some park the setup of a street stall or the summoning of some woman with dyed hair to the police? Where are you now? Where are you hiding?” Nazaryan wrote.
