Political activist calls out Armenian authorities for violence
Anti-government activist Edgar Ghazaryan called out the incumbent Armenian authorities for multiple cases of violence recorded this year.
Speaking at a news conference in Yerevan on Monday, Ghazaryan called attention to the violence against a Mediahub.am journalist by the chief of the State Protection Service, Sargis Hovhannisyan, during protests against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government in May this year.
He charged that the official “suffers from a disease which prevents him from holding public office.”
“Besides not being allowed to hold a leadership post, a person with such a state of mind can't lead a security agency,” the activist stated.
He also recalled that a young pregnant woman, Sona Mnatsakanyan, was killed after being struck by a police car escorting Pashinyan's motorcade in April this year.
Pointing to the police use of excessive force against the parents of killed soldiers in the Yerablur Military Pantheon in September, he underscored that some of the parents were prosecuted after the incident.
Ghazaryan claims the authorities seek to create an atmosphere of fear through such steps.
“The only protected area in Armenia is Nikol Pashinyan's personal space, everything else is vulnerable. Meanwhile, Pashinyan is making decisions leading the country to destruction,” he stated.
