Armenian opposition wants parliament statement in response to Aliyev's rhetoric
The National Assembly of Armenia started an emergency sitting called by the opposition on Friday morning to debate a draft statement in response to a similar document adopted by the Azerbaijani parliament in early November.
Before the start of discussion, MP Hayk Konjoryan of the ruling Civil Contract party said his faction backed the proposed agenda of the sitting. Moreover, it had submitted proposals regarding the text of the statement drafted by the main opposition Hayastan faction and would vote to hold a three-hour debate on the matter.
Presenting the draft statement, Hayastan MP Andranik Tevanyan underscored that the 8 November statement of the Azerbaijani parliament on the 2020 war completely distorted the essence of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, its emergence and the war causes, saying that the Karabakh conflict is allegedly resolved. The statement also included threatening rhetoric against Armenia.
Tevanyan claimed that the statements of government officials “sometimes coincide with the Azerbaijani views” and suggested that the parliamentary majority “approve the draft statement to prove that this is not really the case.”
"It would be our joint response to Aliyev's policy, his rhetoric and would express our support for the statement adopted by the Artsakh National Assembly," the opposition MP said.
