Azerbaijan seeks to cut off Artsakh from Armenia, expert says
Azerbaijan specialist Anzhela Elibegova says the Azerbaijani authorities seek to cut off Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) from Armenia by blocking the sole overland link between them.
A group of Azerbaijanis in civilian clothes blocked the Goris-Stepanakert highway connecting Artsakh to Armenia on Saturday afternoon, citing "environmental reasons".
“The enemy’s task is pretty simple: to cut off Artsakh from Armenia so that even the ouster of the current Armenian leadership would not prevent the exodus of Armenians from Artsakh,” she wrote on Facebook.
“In order to achieve it, Azerbaijan needs to turn the Lachin corridor simply into a road with no security zone around it, remove Russian peacekeepers from the area, set up its checkpoints there and cut off communications whenever it pleases.
“These protests of "environmentalists" on the Goris-Stepanakert road are just a test to see if they can get away with it,” she stated.
