ICRC mediates transfer of severely ill patient from Artsakh to Armenia
A severely ill patient has been transported from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), which remains blocked by Azerbaijan, to Armenia through the mediation efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Zara Amatuni, ICRC communications manager and spokesperson in Yerevan, told Panorama.am on Monday.
“The ICRC has an office in Nagorno-Karabakh, thus we are in daily contact with the local facilities and arrange such activity according to their needs,” she said.
“It’s not for us to decide who should be transferred and how, but we stay in touch with them and always stand ready to act as a humanitarian mediator, as it has been the case here,” Amatuni said.
The blockade began on December 12, when a group of so-called Azerbaijani “eco activists” stopped traffic on the sole road connecting Artsakh to Armenia, known as the Lachin corridor, citing “illegal” mining activity in the area.
