Armenian speaker deplores Russia's UN speech on Lachin blockade
The speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly on Wednesday deplored the speech on the ongoing Azerbaijani blockade of the Lachin corridor delivered by Russia’s Deputy UN Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva at the UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters in the parliament on Wednesday, Alen Simonyan insisted that Russia, an ally of Armenia, “could have made a more direct call” for Azerbaijan to unblock the sole road connecting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia.
He underscored that more direct calls were made by “countries that don’t have close relations with Armenia”.
“I think Russia is either unable or unwilling, or both,” Simonyan told reporters, at the same time saying Russia’s response could be expected.
“I am not surprised. The latest developments indicate that such a response from Russia was highly expected maybe because, among other things, it’s about an area of the Russian peacekeepers’ responsibility. They are thus attempting to downplay the situation that has emerged in their zone of responsibility to shun greater responsibility,” the speaker claimed.
